This year marks the 70th year since the naval air station was commissioned. On April 1, 1943, Rear Adm. John S. McCain, Chief of the Bureau of Aeronautics, said that among the Navy's air stations, there was "never one with such far reaching importance as Naval Air Station Patuxent River." It remains one of the most vital shore installations today.
The air base provides the Navy with a single location for the critical mission of aircraft and systems test and evaluation. Every aircraft flown by the Navy has come through NAS Pax River first. We're proud of our 70 year legacy and the wonderful support we enjoy from our community partners and neighbors. This is where the future of naval aviation begins.
The naval air station operates across 14,500 acres and hosts more than 50 tenant activities. Our two largest mission partners, Naval Air Systems Command and the Naval Air Warfare Center Aircraft Division, bring the full spectrum of research, development, acquisition, test, and evaluation (RDAT&E) for all of naval aviation to the base.
It is the NAS staff's privilege to provide opportunities and meet the challenges facing our Fleet, Fighters and Families. We will do our very best to support you with the safety, security and services you require.
This guide will help you and your family settle in to a new home and job. Use it to become familiar with Pax River's history and mission, our neighboring communities, and our top-notch programs.
