Joint Base Andrews Guide 2014

Wednesday, Dec 18, 2013

Formerly known as Andrews Air Force Base, JBA has operated as a joint base with other military departments since 2009.
Hosted by the United States Air Force 11th Wing, JBA is comprised of more than 60 distinct organizations, including the 89th Airlift Wing (which provides airlift and logistics support worldwide for the president and vice president of the United States, Cabinet members and other high-ranking U.S. and foreign government officials) as well as Army, Navy, Marine Corps, Air Force Reserve and National Guard units. Overseas operations of the Air Force Band, Honor Guard and Chaplaincy are also based here.
JBA was named the top Air Force-led joint base in the Department of Defense for 2012.
The Joint Service Open House is Andrews' springtime showcase of military might, aeronautical acrobatics, and patriotism. More than 205,000 people attended the air show and open house over three days in May of 2012, making it the largest Joint Service Open House in the DoD. Due to budget constraints, there will be no JSOH in 2014.
Approximately 17,000 people live or work on Andrews, enough to make it seem like a small city of its own, with the excitement of the nation's capitol just next door. Andrews is fortunate to be located in one of America's most diverse and influential counties, as well.
Prince George's County is home to nearly 15 percent of Marylanders. Most are here to stay, with nearly 84 percent of county residents living in the same house for one year or more, according to the most recent U.S. Census calculations. Though generations of locals have lived, worked and relaxed here, we're a community open to change, as well. Nearly 20 percent of Prince George's County residents were born overseas, bringing language, culture and traditions from their homelands to enrich the vibrant diversity of the communities that surround Joint Base Andrews.
Many military service members choose to retire to Prince George's County. Approximately 64,735 veterans live here, a slightly higher percentage of the county population than in the state as a whole. In July of 2012 the Veterans Administration opened a new Community Based Outpatient Clinic just outside Joint Base Andrews. The 10,000 square foot facility located at 5801 Allentown Road in Camp Springs is the fifth CBOC operated by the Washington, D.C. VA Medical Center.
Joint Base Andrews and its surrounding communities support each other, work together and are growing together. Since July 2012, they have also had a new voice in local and military news. The Andrews Gazette covers the news, events and people of our community, whether they are directly related to Joint Base Andrews or never enter the base gates. Each Friday, approximately 17,000 Andrews Gazette readers learn about the good things happening in our community--and our challenges, too.
I invite you to pick up a copy of the Andrews Gazette. Meet the people of our community, and join the conversation. You have found a great place to be, and we're glad you're here.
